The amount raised for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal came to a wonderful total of £2,349.80.

Once again, Shelley villagers have risen to the occasion, just as they have been doing since 1948 when the first British Legion organisation began in the village.

In the early days there was a Men’s Branch and a Women’s Branch, each making special efforts towards the fund, along with special efforts and donations, they collected £70.

Over the years, so many names are recorded in the books which were passed on to me.

I well remember Anne Dyson marching up the aisle of Shelley Church proudly carrying the Legion banner of the Women’s Section and on another occasion, the late Mr Jack Whitehouse carrying and laying the Men’s Section banner on the altar.
