Woody tells us about life in Kilburn
So where exactly is Kilburn you might ask?
Kilburn lies south of Sutton Bank on the A170 in the North Yorkshire and is between the market town of Helmsley and Thirsk. It was around here that the real James Herriot practised as a vet and Kilburn has two claims to fame – a horse and a mouse. Creatures great and small.
It was after visiting the Uffington White Horse in Berkshire that a certain Thomas Taylor decided Yorkshire should have a White Horse too. Taylor was a successful master grocer who, although his business was in London, had been born locally .
In 1857 he arranged for a White Horse to be cut into Roulston Scar in the Hambleton Hills at Kilburn.
