Forty three walkers met at noon for the sixth annual New Year’s Day walk followed by a BYO lunch at the Star, Upper Cumberworth, which Michelle had kindly laid out in our absence.
Our four mile saunter set off in the direction of Green Wood (part of the Upper Dearne Woodlands), past Wood Farm and on past the site where the inedible Denby Dale Pie from 1887 was reputedly buried and along the lower route towards Upper Denby.
After a brief stop at five lane ends we returned to Denby Dale via the old paved route, Bank Lane, passing highland cattle and calves and also alpaca along the way.
We then walked along the path at the foot of the railway viaduct and up to the station. From there the route took us across the very muddy fields to Bromley Farm, surely the prettiest site of a tip in Britain?
