When Tim Jones’ dream was fulfilled to take us into the Drakes League in 2001 we couldn’t have believed the success we would have as we celebrate our first decade in Huddersfield’s top cricket league.
We opened our Drakes League campaign on April 21st 2001 with an away game at Primrose Hill and our first visitors to Westerley Lane were Dalton. Both these two opponents had joined the league well over one hundred years ago and it is tragic that both have departed the scene.
Numan Shabbir who played for us for several seasons obviously had Pakistan connections and he played his part in bringing Mohammad Nawaz to Westerley Lane as our first overseas player and he was to serve us well. Thanks to him taking 71 wickets and scoring 895 runs we were able to finish in mid-table.
It was the Seconds who excelled that season as they won the Cedar Court Conference Two to give us promotion. Roger Matthews played a big part in this by winning the League’s bowling prize and becoming our first individual entry in the honours column.
There was further success when the club’s under fifteens won a league and cup double.
