1836 saw the next major building undertaken at our church with the erection of a new Sunday School near the Chapel.
A similar note to the above in the same account book reads
“1835 Feb. 22nd. The Methodists left Shelley scool and went to low chapel to teach in chapel”.
i e. in February 1835, the classes which had been held at Shelley School moved into the Chapel until the Sunday School was ready for their use.
The foundation stone was laid on Easter Monday, April 5th 1836.
Originally the building was only one storey high and was shorter than the building we know today, (the large downstairs room and vestry area at the back occupy the original building).
Collections and a subscription list (original list opened in 1804 raised £7.3s.2d.) raised approximately £150 towards the cost of the building.
