The first major change made to the fabric of the Chapel was the replacement of the roof in 1828.
Why the roof needed replacing so early in the life of the building is not clear, and unfortunately none of the bills or other details of the work survive, but all, or part of the cost, was met by subscriptions made by members and friends of the Chapel, and the original list showing a total of £25.7.6d raised still exists written on the back of an old leaders meeting minutes book. (Held in County Archives).
Similarly a note in the trustees account book reads
“In 1783 Shelley low chapel be gun a build, in 1785 opened. In 1828 the above rofe taken of and a new put on.”
