There was tremendous pride when we viewed the league tables after our nail biting win at Barkisland on the 6th to see Shelley sitting on top of the Premiership table. Our many sponsors and supporters particularly club sponsors Galpharm Pharmaceutical deserves special thanks for their support.
Five days before the first game the ground was covered in a couple of inches of snow but groundsman, Lindsay Burgin, did a tremendous job in preparing a wicket for the visit of Golcar.
It was all worthwhile for we celebrated with a resounding victory and were introduced to probably the most exciting cricketer ever to grace Westerley Lane. The name Muthu Pushpakumara who asks to be called “Pushy” is a name that engenders fear in Drakes League circles.
He announced his presence by reaching his half century with a six that ended up in a garden three houses down Westerley Lane. The next two balls finished in the same garden. He continued to excite those present and celebrated with a six that brought up his century, the only one on the day in the Drakes League.
He was finally out for 104 but he had still to display his bowling talents that he has done in every match to date and already has 20 wickets to his credit.
