There is no player with a better Shelley cricket pedigree than Paul. His mother Linda comes from the famous Matthews cricketing family and it was Uncle Roger who introduced him to the club. His father is Lawrence who not only played for the club but was also groundsman and it is from him that he has inherited the nickname, Flogger.
Paul was born in Clayton West but has played most of his senior cricket with Denby. As a junior he played for Cumberworth when they twice won titles and reached two cup finals. Whilst playing for Denby he made a couple of scores in the seventies but it is as a bowler that he has had most success. His best haul was seven wickets with six in a match being regular occurrences.
As with most of his family he is an all-round sportsman and was a midfield player with Scissett football club. He feels that he has come ‘home’ now that he is playing at Westerley Lane and has turned in some good all-round performances for the club.
