The former umpire was invited to the opening ceremony by Kirklees Councillor Christine Smith.
Speaking about the young cricketing talent Clr Smith said: “They need encouragement and what better encouragement than having the most famous umpire in the world.
“He told them, ‘You can do anything with determination’.”
Clr Smith added: “He was thrilled with the pitch, even though it was raining and he said he would come back in May and give them a little bit of coaching and officially unveil the pitch in better weather.
“I think it was good for them (the youngsters) and it’s put Shelley on the map in terms of cricket.”
Shelley Juniors were promoted this season and Dickie Bird presented the awards for the best performers.
