Rain didn’t stop play when the world’s most famous umpire told budding Shelley cricketers: “You can do anything with determination.”
Dickie Bird was speaking at Shelley Cricket Club he was due to officially unveil the new all-weather pitch - only to be thwarted by terrible weather.
He is due to return early next season to perform that duty - but for over 50 young people and the not-so-young, it was a night to remember as they crammed into the homely club house as Dickie chatted and signed autographs.
