Garden Festival 2003
Shelley’s third Garden Festival was another big crowd-puller.
Over 600 people visited our gardens at the same time as 500 people arrived for the Shelley v Skelmanthorpe Cricket Cup semi-final on Westerley Lane.
Yes, Shelley was a very busy place on Sunday 13th July 2003.
With wall to wall sunshine, it was the hottest day of the year, ideal for cricket, but proved hard going for some people as they visited the 26 gardens, from Rose Cottage at Thunderbridge to Moorlands View, Emley, 400 feet higher! Reading through the visitors books, it came as no surprise that the refreshments, including home-made lemonade, supplied en-route, were very much appreciated.
Already our Garden Festival is becoming an institution. People from far away remarked on how our gardens had developed over the last two years. Others expected banana cake to be on sale, as before, and some just visited their favourite garden and stayed all day.
Some people had travelled great distances, mainly Gardener’s World readers. One man came from New Zealand, others were Yorkshire Post and church magazine readers.
