Organised for the first time in 1999 the Gardens Festival was another tremendous success with over twenty gardens throughout the village opened for public viewing.
The event had been advertised in the gardening press and attracted over five hundred visitors from near and far. We had people from Ilkley, Liverpool and one couple who broke their return journey from Scotland to Devon just to visit the Shelley gardens.
It gave another couple who are to move from North Yorkshire to our village, a little apprehensively it seems, the chance to meet us. The verdict was "what a good atmosphere there is in Shelley".
As for the gardens our visitors were universally astounded to see the quality and they all asked us to repeat the event and to "please let us know".
Nowt more to be said is there except that the night before we held a "Palm Court Evening" in the Village Hall which had been beautifully decorated by Armitages Garden Centre, with four of the 'Skyliners Dance Band' playing at what was a very convivial evening.
