‘Dick, Prick, Alony’
December 1996
Various games of unknown origin were played on the rough earth surface of the playground, which were open to all ages between 7 and 14.

One which was from time to time chosen in preference to kicking a ball about, was, as I remember called “DICK, PRICK, ALONY”.

It almost defies description, and after I have made the effort, I will close this small window on my childhood.

Two sides were chosen by the respective captains who were the oldest and biggest boys.

There was then the toss of a coin (if anyone had one) or the plucking of the longest piece of grass from a closed fist, and the losers were then required to “get down”.

This resulted in something like a Rugby scrum except it was in a single line, each boy’s head being tucked between the buttocks of the boy in front.
