‘Christmas at Hardingley’
June 2001
Another old memory was CHRISTMAS AT HARDINGLEY
In the late 1920’s, 1930’s and early 1940’s Christmas Eve was always special at Hardingley Methodist Chapel.
After an evening of entertainment followed by a supper, at midnight we would sing the Christmas Hymn, ‘Christians Awake’ then, accompanied by a small, portable organ
(2 men were needed to carry it!) we would start to go the rounds singing Christmas hymns.
We visited and sang at Barncliffe Lane End, Brookhouse, Hardingley Farm, Copley House, Wood nook, Longroyd, Upper and Lower Ozzings, Barncliffe Dyke, Barncliffe Hill Top, Kirkstiles and finished at Mount Pleasant Farm.
After singing a couple of hymns there, we would all go into the farmhouse as guests of the Littlewood family and enjoy home-cured bacon sandwiches and a pot of hot tea.
