Blackburns Nurseries
April 1994
This month the magazine focuses on a family that more than any other has changed the face of Shelley and put it on the map for many miles around.

It is almost 40 years since Bill and Barbara Blackburn came Shelley, buying a derelict farm and 60 acres of arable land from the Denton family.

The land was very sour and yields of barley were a mere 8 cwts. per acre. Within four years it was producing 40 cwts.

That was only the start of the story.

Bill, whose father died when he was in his early teens had eyes on following in the steps of his grandfather. The Blackburn’s throughout the decades, have always been involved in horticulture.

I well remember in my childhood buying seeds from the Blackburn’s shop on Victoria lane in Huddersfield. Grandfather Blackburn developed Nurseries in Fenay Lane.
