Unfortunately, as in 2008, the original Saturday date was a total washout for butterflies. Fortunately, I had kept a keen eye on the forecast for the weekend and at the last minute decided to re-schedule the walk to 13:30 on the Sunday afternoon.

Despite the short notice, nine people including the leader made the revised day and time. Although these walks are designed for local residents in mind, all the participants had travelled some distance to enjoy the diverse wildlife available on our doorstep, here in Shelley.

Although the weather was not ideal, it did stay dry all afternoon. When the sun did shine it felt rather warm and pleasant. Certainly it was far better than the previous day. We checked out the contents of the overnight Moth Trap and discussed wildlife gardens and planting schemes for the local area.

Highlights in the trap included a Lesser Swallow Prominent and an Orange Swift, just proving, once again, that not all Moths are brown and boring!
