BUTTERFLIES:
Without doubt 2009 will be remembered for the record influx of migrant Painted Ladies.

It is estimated that up to a billion could have been in the UK and may well have been the best ever year recorded for this species.

By late May there were many moving purposefully North & West over the Whins and Bridle and then good numbers were seen later in the summer as the first migrants bred and their offspring were then on the wing.

At the same time not one but two male Brimstones were recorded and it is hoped that this species will start to breed in the area in the not too distant future.
