March turned out to be a fairly mild month but very wet. Due to the mild winter, frogspawn appeared a whole month earlier than 2006 in nearby ponds, in fact the exact same date as 2007 on 12/3.

The March highlight was a cracking male Reed Bunting, which spent 22/23 March on the Whins - the first new species on the site for three years.

Unlike April 2007, this April was rather average in terms of temperature and sunshine. As a result I recorded 12 species fewer than April 2007.

As the winter visitors departed in late March, the steady trickle of Meadow Pipits and Skylarks began, back to their breeding grounds at higher altitudes.

Other passage migrants included 100 Fieldfare flying NE on 17/4, 5 Great-black backed Gulls on 21/4 and a Cormorant on 24/4.
