By the time summer arrived and the cloud, wind and rain set in, yet again, butterfly watching became more and more difficult.
As a consequence, numbers of some species were particularly low. Purple Hairstreaks were very difficult to find in the unsettled and breezy conditions in August.
The butterfly walk had to be cancelled due to poor weather for the first time and was hastily rearranged for the following day. Unfortunately, the weather turned again and the event had to be abandoned for the second time. Hopefully better weather in 2009!
The year total was 20 species, not bad considering the unsettled conditions and one up on 2007. Migrant species had another poor year, although several Red Admirals were recorded, only a single Painted Lady was found as in 2007.
