2) Whenever possible plant native trees, shrubs and wildflowers. The one exception is Buddleia, see further information below.
If you have room for trees in your garden, ideally plant them on the Northern and Western boundaries of your garden. This will help shelter the garden from cold Northerlies, the prevailing South Westerlies and will also prevent unnecessary shading from the sun too.
3) I would also encourage people to install water butts and compost bins. Both are usually available at a discounted rate from your local council.
Water Butts save water and it is much better to fill ponds with rainwater than tap water and it is free!
Composting your waste also reduces the amount going to the shrinking landfills and the organic matter produced will, over time, enhance your soil for free.
