A small but dedicated group duly turned out on the above date. After all the recent cold and wet weather we were greeted by a bright, sunny day. However there was a strong, cold wind which kept a few species hidden more than usual!
22 species were seen or heard on the walk, with the summer visiting warblers being particularly vocal.
Several finch species were also quite vocal with Goldfinches showing well and singing on cue for us. Dunnocks too gave a good display and everybody was able to witness the males’ wing-flicking courtship display.
We also had a quick look around the Bridle adjacent to the Whins adding singing Blackcap to our tally already seen there. A male Sparrowhawk made a brief appearance as it hunted over the Whins, instantly silencing the remaining singing birds late in the morning.
