Shelley Conservation Group carries out the main focus of environmental activity around the village.
The group was formed as a result of the Huddersfield Pride Millennium Challenge. Initial meetings were held between interested parties, including Kirklees Council, Kirkburton Parish Council and Kirklees Leisure Services in 1998.
In April 1999 the group held it's inaugral meeting in Shelley Village Hall and officers and a constitution were agreed upon. Initial funding was sought and funding for publicity was obtained from the Millennium Festival grant. A small start up grant was also obtained from BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers).
The aim of the group is to promote landscape and nature conservation and manage sites within Shelley as community resources. The hope is to allow informal recreation and enjoyment and study of the wildlife and countryside managed by the group.
