The environmental link forged between Shelley Conservation Group and Shelley High School ensured that 2,000 daffodil and narcissi bulbs were planted in Shelley over two weekends. Armitage’s Garden Centre donated all the bulbs.
Planting took place on the mound, at the entrance to the High School, on Saturday 25th October by members of the Conservation Group and teachers and pupils at Shelley High School. The following Saturday, the same people, together with local residents planted bulbs on the Bridle, Village Green and the Whins.
The ground was very hard, after the long dry summer but subsequent rain should ensure that there should be a good spring show, which will enhance earlier plantings. It is hoped to make this an annual event to which local residents will be encouraged to take part.
On the 1st November, essential felling of trees and bushes on the Whins meadowland took place as required by the management plan provided by BTCV. Thanks to everyone who took part, including new resident, Dave Pamment who, due to some ferocious hawthorns, regarded it all as a ‘blood sport’!
